I always loved the Dragon Ball series, so seeing it come in a game format was very exciting. There are plenty of DBZ games on the market, but none of them had the ability to rival Dragon Ball Xenoverse, a title that was almost perfect for fans of the series! Believe it or not, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 does a very good job at making the experience even better than the predecessor. But how does the game manage to accomplish that?
First of all, it has a better combat. The combat in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 is more dynamic. You still have to focus on combos, but there are some new moves like the high speed smash attacks or the critical smashes that do make a difference as you play. Spamming specials were ok in the first game, but here the effect is not as powerful as it was before. You do get the feel that this entire combat experience is cinematic and the production value that went into the map creation does impress each and every player.
The game world is different as each map does come with its own unique theme and approach. There will be a few repeated themes here and there, but I believe that Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 more than makes up for it with the visual details and the good soundtrack. Here you get more of the same, although some of the end game battles are very rewarding and fun for sure!
I particularly liked how interesting and exciting the story gets to be. It does involve some iconic moments from the anime, but it also manages to hold its own, which is no small feat, to be honest. The Hubworld is a lot better and easier to approach this time around. A similar thing can also be said about the character customization which is distinct, to the point and with a very good production value. The game does provide you with access to the most important characters in the anime, but it will take a little bit of time until you get access to them.
I am particularly impressed by the AI. I didn’t think they would be able to bring a better AI than the first XV, but they did and I am more than happy with it. Of course, the matches will be very challenging, but that’s exactly what you want to have. The AI will strategize, it will create its own tactics and so on. There are matches where the AI can be even tougher than a human opponent, so you will certainly enjoy the entire gameplay experience offered here!
Overall, I have to say that I am very impressed with Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2. This is a sequel done right. There are no downgrades, they didn’t cut any corners. Instead, they improved on the predecessor and they addressed all the problems I had with the original. They didn’t sacrifice anything, instead, they made the game more interesting and fun. The battles are a delight to go through and the entire game seems like a natural evolution of the first XV. Congrats Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, job well done!
